Pilots are awarded or penalized points for every mission they fly according to the following table.  A pilot's point total may never fall below zero for a given convention.  The rating system is used for determining the "Ace of Aces" for a convention along with the number of kills scored.

Point Awards:
Action #
Kill +5
Your side wins mission   (GM option) +1
Each 8 damage points inflicted  (within each mission) +1
Losing a roll-off for credit of a contested kill +1
For each award card, pin or medal won at a previous convention  +1
Your side loses mission   (GM option) -1
Emergency landing & being captured -1
Being shot down -2
Emergency landing & escaping 0

The final pilot rating is determined by dividing the total number of points by the number of missions flown.  For example, a pilot who flies 4 missions and accumulates 18 points, would have a (18/4) 4.50 pilot rating.

The Damage Inflicted Average is determined by dividing the total damage inflicted by the number of missions flown.  For example, a pilot who flies 3 missions and inflicts a total of 29 damage points on his enemies would have a (29/3) 9.67 DI average.

Achieving the status of being the "Ace of Aces" for a particular convention requires a pilot to lead in at least 1 of the 3 scoring categories.  Those categories being:  1) Pilot Rating;  2)  Total Kills; & 3) Damage Inflicted Average.  These categories are listed in order of importance, so there could be ties for the Ace of Aces title if one pilot led in categories 2 & 3, while another led in 1.  In the rare circumstance that a tie actually occurred, the pilots can choose a 1 vs. 1 dogfight if time permits.  Should that option not be exercised, the pilot with the most kills for the convention would be declared the top winner but both pilots would share the Ace of Aces title.

The "Ace of Aces" for each convention is usually awarded the pilot's choice of two museum quality replica medals, a 1914 Iron Cross or a 1917 Distinguished Flying Cross.  New replica medal types are offered from time to time.  The most recent additions are: from Britain the  Military Cross, Victoria Cross & Air Force Cross.  From France, the 1914-18 Croix de Guerre and from the USA, the Distinguished Service Cross.  The U.S. DSC medals are authentic medals but were never issued.  All the medals come in a display case that can be hung on a wall.  At larger conventions or conventions where the players pay to play each individual Aerodrome event, I often offer authentic WWI medals as a choice to the top pilot.  Individual event winners are awarded a 3'x5' historical/patriotic flag of their choice.

At MichiCon 2003, Colonel Mark Rosenberger won an authentic 1918 French Croix de Guerre.  This April at Little Wars 2004, Major Frank Fye won an authentic 1917 Austro-Hungarian Bronze "Karl" Bravery medal (actually issued in April of 1917).  At Origins 2004, Colonel Mike Walter won an authentic 1917 French Croix de Guerre medal and at Origins 2005 I will be offering an authentic WWI Bulgarian commemorative 1915-1918 participation medal to the Ace of Aces for the convention.  The medal is covered in gold gilt and will come with the actual award certificate. The medal was awarded to Bulgarian Captain Boris Ivanov Chunchev.  Captain Chunchev was born in 1887 in Pazardjik.
